Tucked into the farmland of the Riverina, halfway between Sydney and Melbourne, Whitton Malt House has become one of regional NSW’s most talked-about destinations. It’s part working malt house, part boutique retreat, and part paddock-to-plate dining room — all wrapped around a private lake in the middle of cotton and grain country.

Whether you’re planning a lakeside stay, a whisky tasting, a wedding, or just a detour on the Sydney–Melbourne drive, here’s everything you need to know before you book.

    What is Whitton Malt House?

Whitton Malt House sits on Whitton–Darlington Point Road in the Riverina region of NSW, roughly 10km from the village of Whitton, 18km from Darlington Point, and about a 30-minute drive from Griffith. Because it sits almost exactly between Sydney and Melbourne, it’s become a popular stopover as well as a destination in its own right.

The story behind it starts with four Riverina farming families who, over dinner, decided the region needed its own cotton gin. That decision led to Southern Cotton, a cotton ginning facility that’s still operating next door today. In 2019, Southern Cotton partnered with Voyager Craft Malt to build a small-batch malting facility using locally grown grain — supplying Australian brewers, distillers and bakers. Voyager Craft Malt went on to win Gold at the 2022 Malt Cup for World’s Best Pale Ale Malt, a title that had never previously gone outside the USA.

From there, the same families built Whitton Malt House itself: an agri-tourism destination combining the malting facility, a restaurant and whisky cellar, boutique villas, a caravan park, and event and wedding spaces — all set around the man-made Lake Hulong, complete with a waterfall, sculpture garden and walking paths.

2025/2026 updates: the property now runs a full events calendar (including Bonfire Night, the Art Deco Festival, Dadstock, Twilight Markets and Santa’s Village), continues to expand its retail range of local whisky, gin and produce, and has confirmed Riverina Field Days for 19–20 March 2027.

    Whitton Malt House Accommodation

If you’re after Whitton Malt House accommodation, the property offers 14 boutique lakeside villas plus a caravan park, all overlooking Lake Hulong.

    Villa features:

    • One or two-bedroom lakeside villas, each with a King bed (two-bedroom villas offer a second King, or a Queen, or two King singles)
    • Private verandah with a Weber BBQ and lake views
    • Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle (no oven — you cook on the BBQ or order in)
    • Separate bathroom and a spacious lounge area
    • Items used in the villas — robes, lamps, rugs — are also for sale in the on-site retail store

Caravan park: for those travelling with a van, Whitton Malt House also operates drive-through powered sites, making it one of the newer caravan parks in the Riverina.

Check-in / check-out: Check-in at Whitton Malt House accommodation is from 2pm to 5pm through the retail store. The property gates close to the public at 5pm, so if you’re arriving later, you need to contact the team in advance to arrange alternative key and access details.

Good to know: the villas sit adjacent to the Southern Cotton gin, which runs 24/7 during the cotton season (roughly May–September), so some background noise is possible overnight during that period.

Prices and packages: Whitton Malt House accommodation rates vary by villa type, season and demand, and are managed through the property’s live booking system rather than published as fixed prices. For current 2026 rates and availability, check the official booking page or call the team directly on (02) 6955 2592.

Booking your Whitton Malt House accommodation:

    1. Head to the official booking portal to check live rates and villa availability.
    2. Email admin@whittonmalthouse.com.au if you’d like food pre-ordered for your villa fridge (at least 48 hours before arrival).
    3. Call (02) 6955 2592 for group bookings, corporate rates, or if you’re arriving after 5pm.

    Dining at Whitton Malt House

The restaurant is open seven days a week and leans heavily on Riverina produce, under Head Chef David Bowers.

    Service times:

    • Breakfast: 7:30am – 10:30am daily
    • Lunch: 11:30am – 2:30pm daily — think sustainable Murray cod, grass-fed beef and seasonal share plates
    • Dinner: from 5:30pm daily — a casual menu Sunday to Thursday, and a more refined, paddock-to-plate menu Friday and Saturday nights

The Whisky Cellar: below the main building, this is an intimate space used for private dining and guided tastings, showcasing a curated list of premium Australian whiskies and spirits — the natural extension of the on-site Voyager Craft Malt operation next door.

Group dining: groups of 15–30 guests can choose the Group Dining Menu or the Function Menu (from $55 per adult); groups over 30 are asked to order from the Function Menu for smoother service. Bills are processed as one per group — the venue can’t split bills for large parties.

Reservations: book a table via the online booking system or by calling (02) 6955 2592. For group and function bookings, email admin@whittonmalthouse.com.au.

    Reviews & Testimonials

Whitton Malt House draws a mixed-to-strongly-positive spread across review platforms, which is worth setting expectations around:

    • Google: around 4.5 out of 5 stars from several hundred reviews, with guests consistently praising the setting, staff friendliness and the on-site whisky tasting.
    • Restaurant Guru: 4.7 out of 5 from nearly 1,000 reviews, with diners highlighting the atmosphere and the “diamond in the rough” feel of finding quality dining in such a remote setting.
    • TripAdvisor: currently sits at 3 out of 5 from a smaller pool of traveller reviews, ranked the #1 specialty lodging listing in Whitton (of one) — reviewers who stayed overnight generally rate the villas as clean and comfortable, while a handful of dining reviews mention inconsistent food quality on busier nights.

    What guests say most often:
